Inquisitive semantics

Inquisitive semantics is a semantic framework which enriches the standard, truth-conditional approach to meaning with a fundamental inquisitive dimension, in order to keep track of theĀ issue raised, or theĀ alternatives presented by a sentence.

The framework has several formal incarnations, depending on the specific notion of meaning and logical language adopted. Among these, the ones I have proposed, or contributed to develop, are basic inquisitive semantics, inquisitive possibility semantics, inquisitive witness semantics, and dichotomous inquisitive semantics.

In recent work, inquisitive semantics has been applied to the study of many linguistic phenomena, including questions, epistemic modals, imperatives, sluicing, exhaustivity implicatures, polarity particles, multi-functional morphemes, and disjunctive lists.
